You're Back In The Room Channel Nine
People have mentioned to me this "new" game show called "You're Back In The Room" with host Daryl Somers and a hypnotist. #YBITRAU
The idea is that four contestants battle it out for prizes worth $20,000 while seemingly impeded and "set up" by the hypnotist to have some silly behaviours and impediments to their success.
I have watched only the first 10 minutes of the first episode to see what it is really about.
It is surely funny, and the contestants have clearly been chosen for their theatrical skills.
It Looks Fake
TV is seldom authentic and game shows even less so. The show looks fake. I sometimes get a volunteer in my show who is a great trance subject, interesting, funny and expressive, and able to be all these things on stage with eyes open. Maybe one in 1000 is like that.
To have four in one show is miraculous. Four from four is completely unbelievable.
Perhaps they screened thousands of volunteers to find such fantastic candidates. If they did they they kept quiet about it.
More likely, the $20,000 is enough of an incentive to motivate those four to do their best and that might indeed be enough to usher them past their inhibitions.
Lights, Camera, Action!
The psychological pressure of being under lights and on camera does help some people to focus and work hard at following the hypnotist, and thereby makes them easier to hypnotise.
It often happens that someone comes up on my stage looking to lark about (and likely soon to be dismissed by me) but then finds the on stage experience, where they look out at the crowd, makes them take it more seriously.
So Is It Fake Then?
Honestly - one cannot be certain without looking into it deeper. But it is TV - so my gut tells me it is more likely than not to be fake to some degree. All that money on the line, and not having the option to "not have a show" means the TV folk will not leave anything to chance, especially not the hypnotisability of the subjects.
