Speaking of Faith
I try to avoid discussing religion in the context of hypnosis or my shows because it can be a touchy subject. A while ago a woman came up to me after a show. She was dressed in very sombre dark clothes, and I could see she had no makeup or adornments. I hadn’t noticed her at all during the show, she might have just turned up at the end, or might have been there all along. She had an issue with me because apparently her religion tells her that hypnosis is evil and that I must therefore be evil too. I presume she belongs to one of the more extreme religious sects, and apparently one that does not offer forgiveness or kind words - she was very snarky. Anyway I referred her to the Association of Christian Hypnotists to debate theology - that is not my area of expertise.
I am not evil. But if I was I would probably tell you I wasn’t so I guess that my opinion counts for little.
We have performed for a few religious groups, Catholic and Anglican schools, Jewish festivals and community events and the like. (I have hypnotised both priests and rabbis). The mainstream religions are ok with the idea of hypnosis.
Perhaps, like me, they understand that it is not a mystical, magical, or even a spiritual thing. It is a psychological techique. No special powers required.
