Saturday nights are big for me, so when Alison rang wanting a smaller birthday event I had to decline as I had already been booked. However that other event got cancelled so I rocked up on Saturday to a rather nice house in Malvern East to meet a lovely couple, clearly still besotted with each other, and their friends. It was basically a cocktail party, everyone dressed to the nines.
They thought nothing of letting me rearrange their lounge room, and the festivities commenced with a video the husband had made. It was hilarious and touching. I am rarely upstaged but this time I was. (I needed a tissue).
Both husband and wife volunteered along with 8 guests. I don't usually get husband and wife pairs like that, he was clearly skeptical too. And often the pressures of being “host” make the hosts tense subjects.
This night was different. The lovely coupe both went out light a light. Alison dropping into a trance before I had begun the induction. The crowd were stunned and by then I already knew that it would be a fantastic show. And it was.
There was an extra special western cover of baa baa black sheep too.
It is hard to express how much fun it is to entertain people who are already a close community of friends and family. It gives me such pleasure every time it scarcely seems like work.
This was such a warm and friendly group I felt privileged to be a part of their celebration. I am writing this as I fly to Nelson NZ still high from that event and looking forward to my next show tomorrow.
A wine conference. I wonder how that will go.
